Columbia University has long been the laboratory testing government repression against the pro-Palestinian movement. The most recent was the arrest of Mahmoud Khalil.

Yesterday, the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) agents entered non-public areas at Columbia to search two student rooms.

“I am writing heartbroken to inform you that we had federal agents from the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) in two University residences tonight. No one was arrested or detained,” Columbia interim president Katrina Armstrong wrote in an email to the university community late Thursday.

“No items were removed, and no further action was taken. Federal agents from the DHS served Columbia University with two judicial search warrants signed by a federal magistrate judge authorizing DHS to enter non-public areas of the University and conduct searches of two student rooms.”

Hind’s Hall

Much of what you will read about the student protests at Columbia last summer will refer to Hind’s Hall. One of the things the protesters did was rename Hamilton Hall as Hind’s Hall, in the memory of six-year-old Rajab Hind, who was killed by the Israeli military in a horrifying story that is explained in the video below.

“The reason Hind Rajab’s case matters so much is because is that she is one of the most well-known victims of Israel’s genocidal campaign in Gaza.”

I wrote these two blog posts last September about what was happening at Columbia University then.

These videos by Macklemore, include scenes of police violence against pro-Palestinian students at Hamilton (Hinds) Hall. All proceeds go the UNRWA.
