An Opportunity

The arrival of approximately 700 U.S. Marines in the Los Angeles area on Tuesday, June 10, marked a significant escalation in the federal response to ongoing protests against immigration enforcement operations. This development has intensified an already fraught situation, characterized by escalating legal battles between state and federal authorities, the imposition of a nighttime curfew in Downtown Los Angeles, and fierce condemnation from California officials. The protests, which began around June 6 following a series of U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) raids that resulted in dozens of arrests, have become a flashpoint in a national debate over immigration policy and federal authority

The events of the past week, and particularly the developments of the last 24 to 48 hours, have starkly illuminated the deep fissures in American society concerning immigration policy, the scope of federal power, and the sanctity of civil liberties. Los Angeles currently stands at the epicenter of this national confrontation. The federal government, citing threats to order and federal functions, has asserted a robust and controversial authority, while state and local leaders have mounted a determined resistance, defending their sovereignty and the rights of their residents. Both sides appear to be digging in, signaling a period of sustained tension and profound uncertainty for the city and potentially for the nation.

We’ve been given the opportunity to live out our ideals, to fight for our values, to be the community and the people we always said we were.

There are Home Depots all over the country. There are many other appropriate places to protest. Army tanks will soon be parading in the Capital. Go there if you can, and say no. Our friends, neighbors, and coworkers are being targeted. Our communities and our country are under siege. It’s time for us to defend them.
