Army in the Streets

Dramatic devlopments in Los Angeles are happening now as the National Guard is being deployed there. This escalation in the suppression of civil liberties is consistent with the Trump administration’s authoritarianism.

This direct conflict between federal executive action and state governmental opposition immediately elevates the situation beyond a localized law enforcement matter, into the complex area of constitutional power and federal-state relations.

The deployment of National Guard troops to Los Angeles by presidential order, ostensibly in response to escalating protests against federal immigration enforcement actions, has ignited a fierce debate with profound national implications. These demonstrations, primarily targeting Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) raids, reportedly involved clashes between demonstrators and authorities, property damage, and significant civic unrest. A critical feature of this federal intervention is its execution over the explicit and strenuous objections of California’s state and local leadership, most notably Governor Gavin Newsom and Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass. This direct conflict between federal executive action and state governmental opposition immediately elevates the situation beyond a localized law enforcement matter, into the complex area of constitutional power and federal-state relations.

Research

I’ve been working on different ways to research and discuss justice related issues. Google’s NotebookLM research tool has revolutionized how I do research, and provides interesting ways to explore the data.

Within a NotebookLM project the sources of data are selected by you, the researcher. The power of NotebookLM is that it will only use the sources you include in your project in the analysis it does. This is completely different from the way artificial intelligence (AI) has be used until now, where the application finds and uses its own sources.

Mind Map

Mind maps are used to visualize information. Identifying the major concepts and their relationships. NotebookLM’s mind maps are interactive. Clicking on one of the nodes opens further branches of the map.

InfoGraphic

I’m especially excited about the ability of another Google tool, Gemini 2.5 Pro to create InfoGraphics from your data sources. Following are screenshots of today’s infographic about the National Guard deployment in Los Angeles.
