Fast to feed Gaza

Sources (listed below) present a grim picture of a population facing starvation and severe humanitarian deprivation in Gaza, directly linked to the Israeli blockade and ongoing military actions. This situation has triggered widespread international condemnation and accusations of serious violations of international law. The lack of sufficient aid reaching Gaza, coupled with concerns about forced displacement, has fueled protests domestically and internationally, including student hunger strikes in the United States demanding accountability and institutional action.

World Hunger Day

Tomorrow, May 28, is World Hunger Day. The American Friends Service Committee (AFSC) has a place to pledge to fast in solidarity with the starvation of the people of Gaza. https://afsc.org/action/pledge-fast-people-gaza?ms=web25HG

And there is detailed information below from Code PINK about how to go about fasting yourself.

Student Protests and Hunger Strikes in the US:

  • Students at California State and other universities across the US are engaged in protests, including hunger strikes, to pressure their institutions regarding the situation in Gaza (California State students protest aid blockade in Gaza with hunger strike.pdf, From the Community | Why we’re joining the hunger strike for justice in Palestine, US Students on Hunger Strikes as Israeli-Engineered Famine Takes Hold in Gaza).
  • These strikes are motivated by the aid blockade and perceived institutional complicity through investments or partnerships (California State students protest aid blockade in Gaza with hunger strike.pdf, From the Community | Why we’re joining the hunger strike for justice in Palestine, US Students on Hunger Strikes as Israeli-Engineered Famine Takes Hold in Gaza). Max Flynt, a hunger striker, cited the aid blockade as a decisive factor (California State students protest aid blockade in Gaza with hunger strike.pdf). Marcus Bode highlighted his university’s partnership with Boeing, a supplier to the IDF (California State students protest aid blockade in Gaza with hunger strike.pdf).
  • Students see hunger strikes as a powerful form of non-violent resistance, drawing inspiration from historical movements (From the Community | Why we’re joining the hunger strike for justice in Palestine). They state, “We escalate to a hunger strike because of Stanford’s continued silence despite our repeated calls for action… We turn, then, to that which they cannot ignore and that which is ours entirely.” (From the Community | Why we’re joining the hunger strike for justice in Palestine).
  • Student demands include full transparency regarding university endowments, divestment from companies like Boeing that supply the Israeli military, ending academic partnerships with Israel, dropping charges against protesters, and protecting academic freedom (California State students protest aid blockade in Gaza with hunger strike.pdf, From the Community | Why we’re joining the hunger strike for justice in Palestine, US Students on Hunger Strikes as Israeli-Engineered Famine Takes Hold in Gaza).
  • Some hunger strikes have resulted in university commitments, such as expanding divestment policies and working toward partnerships with Palestinian universities (US Students on Hunger Strikes as Israeli-Engineered Famine Takes Hold in Gaza).
  • The physical effects of the hunger strikes are being felt by students (California State students protest aid blockade in Gaza with hunger strike.pdf).

Stand in solidarity with Gaza! Fast to feed!

We demand an end to Israel’s manufactured famine in Gaza and an end to the genocide! We extend a global invitation to all to abstain from food for one day or more, not just in solidarity with the people of Gaza, who are being deliberately starved by Israel, but to mobilize resources to feed them. Whether you fast one day, one week, or until the genocide ends — even if you cannot fast at all — you can help deliver desperately needed food to Gaza.

There are many ways to engage in this solidarity movement:

  1. Commit to 200 calories a day, the amount Gazans receive if they’re lucky. Some have committed to a few days while others are committed until ceasefire in Gaza! Each day, you can send us a photo of what you have chosen for your 200-calorie meal, and some fasters will be sharing their experiences in Congressional offices. If possible, send the money you would have spent on food each day to Gaza.
  2. Participate in a group hunger strike, in which each individual in the strike fasts for 24 hours, and is followed by another individual fasting the next day, and so on. No food should be eaten over these 24 hours, but water is allowed. Let us know which day you intend to fast! If you are able, donate the amount you would have spent on food on your fast day to feed people in Gaza.
  3. We know some folks won’t be able to fast at all, and that’s okay! Instead, you can donate to feed people in Gaza and post that donation with your demand to end Israel’s manufactured famine in Gaza and an end to the genocide. Tag us @codepinkalert so we can share your act of solidarity!
    1. Here’s an example of what you can caption your post with, but feel free to speak from the heart: “I made a donation to help feed the people of Gaza who are undergoing genocide and famine at the hands of Israel and the U.S. I demand an end to these crimes against humanity!”
  4. Can’t fast or donate? No problem. Everyone who signs up on this page is signing onto the demand to end to Israel’s U.S.-backed manufactured famine and genocide in Gaza!

As soon as you sign up, we will send you instructions on the next steps, including fasting recipes, and how to send your lunch money as a donation to feed people in Gaza. We will be collecting donations for the United Nations Relief and Works Agency (UNRWA).

Download this sign to take a photo and share it with us by emailing fastforgaza@codepink.org!
