Yesterday’s post was about the refusal of The New York Times to accept a paid advertisement from the American Friends Service Committee (AFSC) referring to Israel’s genocide in Gaza.
The ad read: “Tell Congress to stop arming Israel’s genocide in Gaza now! As a Quaker organization, we work for peace. Join us. Tell the President and Congress to stop the killing and starvation in Gaza.”
The Palestine Chronicle published a story about this.
A Quaker peace advocacy group, The American Friends Service Committee (AFSC), has canceled planned advertising with the New York Times after “the paper refused to allow an ad that referred to Israel’s genocide in Gaza.”
Quaker Group Cancels Ad after New York Times Refused Use of ‘Genocide’ by Palestine Chronicle Staff, Palestine Chronicle, January 9, 2025
As a member of the Wisconsin Coalition for Justice in Palestine, I’m on the group’s encrypted Signal group. The story about the AFSC was a chance to share about Quaker work, so I shared a link to yesterday’s blog post there. There were several positive responses. Plus, someone posted a link to AFSC’s Action Hour, that I had not been aware of! The benefits of community communication.
AFSC Action Hour
Join us online every Friday (12 noon ET/ 9 a.m. PT) to demand a cease-fire for Gaza.
In the face of the ongoing crisis in Gaza, people across the U.S. are coming together every week to take action.
You’ll get updates from AFSC staff in Gaza, hear what’s happening on Capitol Hill, and get resources for your activism. Together, we’ll contact Congress to demand an immediate cease-fire and humanitarian access for Gaza.
This was the agenda for last week’s Action Hour meeting. There are links to many resources in it.
4 ways to take action today
1. Contact your members of Congress regularly. Take a few minutes today to both call them and send them an email. Here’s a sample script you can adapt.
2. Write a letter to the editor calling for a cease-fire. Here are some tips on effective letter-writing.
3. Take part in protests. Download and print our free posters for Palestine. Check out our guide to protesting for tips to prepare and keep you and others safe.
4. Donate today to support AFSC’s Gaza emergency response in Gaza.
Sign up for periodic emails from AFSC’s Palestine Activism Program.
