Nakba refers to the ‘catastrophe’ that occurred in Palestine when the British left in 1948, and 750,000 Palestinians were forced to leave their land and homes immediately.
I was led to research and write this document about Nakba, to help me better understand what is happening in the Middle East now. Below there is a button to download the document. I plan to continue to update this. When you click on the download button in the future, you will get the latest version.
Why should you listen to me?
Over the past twenty years I’ve been led on a journey to witness what life is like for those who aren’t ‘white’ in this country. Those lived experiences taught me perspectives of those who are not included in the dominant society. The daily injustices and violence against Black, Indigenous and other people of color (BIPOC).
When I say I was “led” on this journey, I mean I listened to the Spirit to guide me. As a Quaker I’ve had spiritual experiences that have shown me what to do, where to go, when I had no idea myself. I’m also led to share these experiences and what I’ve learned from them.
Most white people I talk with stop listening when the discussion turns to empire and colonialism. They don’t want to question the systems they benefit from so significantly.
I need to state this clearly in hopes that you might not turn away. That you might move outside your comfort zone. That you might consider what life is like for those who are experiencing the “catastrophic” (Nakba) consequences of those systems continuing in the present day.
